History Hour 33 – “Portraits of Our People” by Mr Alex Fernandes – Friday, 14th September 2007.

In October 2005, Alex photographed 37 prominent ‘Tiatriste in his studio in Goa and Mumbai. Prince Jacob, Remi Colaco. Antonette, are some of the names featured in this series. This was followed by a portrait series on ‘Goan Musicians’ and ‘Goan Artist’.

Selected portraits form the ‘Tiatriste’, and the ‘Goan musician’ series were on display and also the topic of discussion. The talk touched on the elements of the photogtaphic portrait, with portrait examples from the two series.

A more detailed look at the Tiatriste’ series as compared to other portraits, and the different dimension it takes from the photogtapher’s perspective were highlighted. The motivation and experiences while making these portraits were also a part of the talk. A technical reference was made for those interested in technical details such as equipment, software and lighting used in the process.

Mr Alex Fernandes is a professional photographer for the last 20 years. He started off as assistant to Rahul Patel, a fashion photographer in Bombay. Moving on from Bombay, Fernandes worked for the Kodak Distributor in the Middle East where he set up and managed a high-end professional portrait studio. Alex also served on the faculty for portrait photography and lighting workshops for Kodak (Near East). Alex Fernandes currently runs ‘Portrait Atelier’, that provides professional studio photography services in Goa.
