Goa has 15,749 disabled persons as per the 2001 Census, out of which 8,889 are males and 6,860 are females. National Sample Survey 2002 states that there are 22,000 disabled persons in Goa as on 2002. The total disabled in Goa as on 31st March, 2012 is estimated at 40,000 with slow learners, learning disabled and autism included in that number.
December 3 is World Disabled Day. This presentation explored the various issues concerning disability and thus create awareness and sensitization on the empowerment of persons with disability among the general public.
Mr. Avelino de Sa is the President of Disability Rights Association of Goa, a registered charitable society recognized by the Directorate of Social Welfare, Government Of Goa, which was started in October 2003 by persons with disability. Inspite of having orthopaedic disability, he is a well-known Investment Consultant, having his own firm based in Panaji, Goa.
“Silence Speaks” is an art exhibition of 14 selected paintings by Nishad Gupte, an amateur painter and sculptor. Nishad is a graduate in Fine Arts from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. A deaf and mute, he has tried to transcend this barrier and convey his thoughts and ideas on canvass in this art work, “Silence Speaks”. This exhibition is open to all at the art gallery, Xavier Centre of Historical Research from December 7-13, 2012 from 10.00 am till 7 pm, on 9th, Sunday from 10.00am till 1.00pm.
