Curatorial Approaches to Understanding Angelo da Fonseca’s Madonna, a lecture by Dr. Savia Viegas

Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Porvorim, organized a History Hour on the current Fonseca Exhibition, on January 19th, 2023. Dr. Savia Viegas, the Curator of the Exhibition, spoke on CURATORIAL APPROACHES TO UNDERSTANDING ANGELO DA FONSECA’S MADONNA. The lecture was attended by academics and art enthusiasts.Through her creative and bold curatorial approach, Dr. Viegas highlighted the richness of the Fonseca paintings, their relevance to Indian culture and political history. Woven in the paintings are Indian and Christian myths which lend uniqueness and freshness to the paintings on display. The Goan village ethos also influenced Fonseca’s interpretation of his Christian faith through his paintings.

Dr. Vishwesh Kandolkar, Associate Professor at the Goa College of Architecture, who has an expertise on the visual history of the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa, ably moderated the History Hour and the Q & A session which was open to the audience.
